Streamlined White-face Jock $600 with FREE SHIPPING
A shady walk, mansions... and the lawn jockey in Clinton IA 1905. Click on picture for larger view.
A jockey hitching post up front of the mansion... it was the goal of many in America in 1900 but realized by few.
But with steam engines developed in the 1830's to power ships, trains, and factories- followed by oil power in the 1860's, steel manufacturing perfected in the 1870's, followed by the harnessing of electricity
and invention of the telephone in the 1880's, and with automobiles and air travel in developmental stage, the new millennium promised to produce "a million new millionaires", a million new mansions
with a million new lawn jockeys... and a future of endless possibilities. All of these advances, the most dramatic in the history of civilization, were mirrored in the advance of hitching posts from a wood or stone monolith in the 1830's to the iron jockey hitching post in the 1870's- but only in America... hitching posts as an art form in Europe and elsewhere never advanced past horse head finials.
If you happened to be tramping through the woods near Putnam, Connecticut in September of 1901, you would have stumbled across
2 young lads dreaming this exact American dream of endless possibilities in real time- playing "house" in their ramshackle tent with the younger one(with no shoes) pretending to be the "millionaire in his mansion" while his older friend "Putnam Boy"(with missing shirt buttons) taking the outside role of "lawn jockey"(holding a fishing net as a "ring").
It's a powerful image taken at the peak of America's "lawn jockey" era, not only because it reflects on a humorous situation and the character of the individuals portrayed, but also because "Putnam Boy's" jockey gag illustrates the integration of the jockey hitching post in society as a whole.

The dream fulfilled
So where did Putnam Boy end up, coming from these humble beginnings? Did his dream of "endless possibilities" die in a World War 1 trench? Of course in just a few years all new "millionaires" would be driving cars
instead of buggies... and there would be no jockeys up front of their mansions to tie up ponies- so surely there would be no jockeys for sale when Putnam Boy became an adult except for antique ones...
But wait, if Putnam Boy was still alive in 1946(at about age 55), although it's unlikely he became a millionaire... as fate would have it he finally COULD fulfill his dream... with a new streamlined jock on his lawn!
Above: a 1905 postcard drawing predicting how main street would look in 2016. Click on picture for larger view.
In any event, because Putnam Boy's "jockey gag" of 1901 was captured on a glass plate negative
and that image on that plate survived a 100-year journey through the space/time continuum to your eyes today, Putnam Boy's dream of a world of endless possibilities lives on... because the jockey lives on.
A graph showing how the tomorrow of Putnam Boy's dream became reality.

Paint is chip, fade, and UV resistant and will last for many years. The statue itself is made of non-rusting Aluminum so it too will last for generations.
A ring is included for the Streamlined White-face Jock's hand, but these Jocks also work well with our optional oil and solar lanterns(lantern sold separately- CLICK HERE for more information).
